When do I take the rug to the cleaners and when can I clean it myself

Winter arrives, and with it the cold, and many of our clients consider putting away the summer rugs and removing the winter ones. These are warmer, thicker and softer, and their objective is to heat the house and prevent our feet from touching the frozen ground as soon as we get out of bed.

With this transfer of carpets that come and go , many wonder what to do with the summer carpet, whether to wash it by hand , use the washing machine and then store it for the whole winter; or go to a dry cleaner and leave everything in the hands of professionals. Also, do I also wash the winter one before putting it on if it has been stored all summer? Dye or hand wash?

Dry cleaning will rarely be a mistake

The general advice to treat a valuable object is to take it to the place where it will be treated by professionals who know it. And in the case of carpets those professionals are the dyes . It will be very difficult to find one that does not meet our type of carpet or that does not know how to work according to which fabrics.

That being said, while our rug will be well received and well treated at the dry cleaner, this may be a financially unfeasible option. The dye is not usually an expensive service for the service they offer, but it is expensive. The cleaning service for a carpet is between 12 and 30 euros per square meter, always with a minimum per service that has prices between 20 and 50 euros per piece, although there are exceptions.

To give an example, within our Shaggy line we have different sizes (110 x 60 to 230 x 160) that with market prices have a wide range, from just under 30 euros to over 150

Carpets that are very heavy, especially large, difficult to transport or with a special or delicate fabric could trigger these prices. This makes us consider cleaning them at home.

Labels give us some clues

There are rugs that cannot be washed by hand or in the machines we have at home, and that clearly indicate the use of products (perchlorethylene or fluorinated solvents) or washing techniques (such as dry cleaning) that we do not have in our home. In this case we will have the opca option, and we will see it indicated in the different symbols of the labels .

However, most rugs can be washed by hand, always following these little tips that we already gave in the past; or machine washed when we have a washing machine and dryers that do not damage fabrics.

Do we really have to deep clean our carpets?

The problem with storing a fabric for a long time is that we run the risk of bacteria and fungi running rampant. But there are methods that make it safer to store our rugs:

  1. Clean the visible stains that we see on the fabric. These spots, especially if they are recent, support fungi.

  2. Storing them in places that are not very humid and without darkness is usually difficult, but we can, on the contrary:

Keep them well wrapped in a plastic that does not allow the passage of air .
